3D Cone Beam Imaging at Vero Beach Surgical Arts

A traditional dental X-ray is a flat, two-dimensional image. It is useful, but it does not show depth, angles, or the precise relationship between bone, teeth, nerves, and sinuses. For implant planning, jaw surgery, complex extractions, and many other oral surgery procedures, that three-dimensional information is essential.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), often called a 3D dental CT scan, captures a high-resolution three-dimensional volume of your jaw and surrounding structures in less than 30 seconds, with significantly less radiation than a medical CT scan. We have CBCT available in-office, so most patients get the scan they need at the same visit as their consultation.

How CBCT Improves Surgical Planning

3D imaging changes what is possible in oral surgery. With a CBCT scan, Dr. Colgan can:

  • Plan implant placement to the millimeter, avoiding the inferior alveolar nerve, sinus floor, and adjacent tooth roots (see Dental Implants)
  • Identify the precise position and angulation of impacted teeth (see Wisdom Teeth Removal and Exposure of Impacted Teeth)
  • Map fracture lines and bone displacement in facial trauma cases
  • Plan orthognathic jaw surgery with virtual surgical planning software
  • Evaluate the airway in patients with obstructive sleep apnea
  • Assess the bony temporomandibular joint in TMJ cases
  • Identify cysts, tumors, or pathology that would be invisible on a 2D X-ray
  • Determine whether bone grafting or a sinus lift is needed before implant placement

For some procedures, CBCT data is used to design custom surgical guides that direct implant or osteotomy placement to the planned position with very high accuracy.

What to Expect During the Scan

A CBCT scan is quick, painless, and easier than a panoramic X-ray for most patients:

  • You stand or sit in the imaging unit
  • A scanner arm rotates around your head, capturing the data
  • The full scan takes less than 30 seconds
  • There is no enclosed tunnel and no contrast injection

Within minutes the images are available for review, and Dr. Colgan can walk you through them on a large screen during your consultation.

Radiation Safety

A CBCT scan exposes you to significantly less radiation than a conventional medical CT scan and is appropriate for the kinds of detailed planning oral surgery requires. We follow the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable), using the smallest field of view and lowest exposure setting consistent with the diagnostic question.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a CBCT scan different from a regular dental X-ray?

A regular dental X-ray is a 2D image. A CBCT scan is a true 3D volume that lets us see your anatomy from any angle, measure distances precisely, and identify structures that 2D imaging cannot show.

Is the radiation dose high?

Compared to a medical CT scan, the dose is much lower. Compared to a regular dental X-ray, it is higher but still well within accepted safety standards for the diagnostic value it provides.

Do I always need a CBCT?

No. For straightforward procedures with no anatomical concerns, a standard X-ray may be enough. CBCT is used when the additional 3D information meaningfully improves planning or safety.

Is the scan painful?

No. The scan is completely painless. You just stand or sit still for less than 30 seconds.

Will my insurance cover a CBCT scan?

Coverage varies. Many dental and medical plans cover CBCT when it is medically necessary for surgical planning. Our team verifies your benefits and provides a written estimate.

How long until I see the results?

Within minutes of the scan. Dr. Colgan often reviews the images with you during the same appointment.

Can my dentist or orthodontist receive my CBCT scan?

Yes. We can share your imaging with your dental team to coordinate care.

Will I have to leave the office for the scan?

No. Our CBCT scanner is on site. Most patients have their scan, consultation, and treatment plan in a single visit.
