Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Faster Healing
Your body already has a powerful healing system. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) concentrates one of its most active components (your own platelets and growth factors) and delivers them directly to the surgical site. The result is faster, more predictable healing, particularly in bone grafting, dental implant placement, and complex extractions.
At Vero Beach Surgical Arts, Dr. J. Andrew Colgan has used PRP as part of advanced surgical care for many years, often pairing it with other regenerative materials to optimize outcomes.

How PRP Works
Platelets are the cells responsible for clotting and for releasing growth factors that signal the body to heal. PRP concentrates these platelets to several times their normal concentration in blood.
The process is straightforward:
- Draw. A small amount of your own blood is drawn at the start of your appointment.
- Spin. The blood is processed in a centrifuge that separates the platelet-rich layer from the rest.
- Apply. The concentrated PRP is mixed with your bone graft material, applied directly to the surgical site, or used to coat an implant or extraction socket.
Because PRP is derived from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction or disease transmission. It is fully biocompatible.
Where We Use PRP
PRP is most commonly used as part of:
- Bone grafting to accelerate the integration of graft material with native bone
- Sinus lifts (Sinus Lift)
- Ridge augmentation (Ridge Augmentation)
- Socket preservation at the time of tooth extraction
- Implant placement in compromised bone or when immediate loading is planned
- Full arch implant cases to support faster integration (Full Arch Restoration)
PRP is not appropriate or necessary for every surgical procedure. Dr. Colgan recommends it where the clinical evidence supports a meaningful benefit.
What PRP Can and Cannot Do
PRP can:
- Accelerate soft tissue healing
- Improve early bone formation in grafted areas
- Reduce post-operative inflammation in many cases
- Reduce the risk of dry socket after extraction
- Improve graft integration when combined with bone replacement materials
PRP cannot:
- Eliminate the need for bone grafting where significant bone loss exists
- Guarantee implant success on its own
- Substitute for proper surgical technique or appropriate case selection
PRP is a useful tool in the surgical toolbox. It is not a stand-alone cure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PRP safe?
Yes. PRP is derived from your own blood, so there is no risk of allergic reaction or disease transmission. The procedure is well established and widely used in oral surgery, orthopedics, sports medicine, and other fields.
Will I need a separate blood draw appointment?
No. The blood is drawn at the start of your surgical appointment and processed during your preparation. The full process adds only a small amount of time to the visit.
How much extra does PRP cost?
The cost varies based on the procedure. It is generally an add-on to your treatment plan rather than a major separate expense. We provide a written estimate at consultation.
Does insurance cover PRP?
Coverage varies. Many dental insurance plans do not specifically cover PRP, but it may be included in the overall surgical fee. Our team verifies coverage before treatment.
How long does PRP last?
PRP is consumed by the healing process. It exerts its effects during the early phases of healing, after which your body continues remodeling on its own.
Is PRP the same as PRF?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) are related but different formulations. Both use your own blood. PRF forms a fibrin scaffold and releases growth factors more slowly. Dr. Colgan will discuss which option, if any, fits your case.
Will PRP make my graft heal faster?
In most cases, yes, modestly. The clinical evidence supports improved early healing and bone formation in grafted sites when PRP is used appropriately.
Can I have PRP without surgery?
PRP at our practice is used as part of oral surgery procedures. We do not offer cosmetic or non-surgical PRP applications.
