Ridge Augmentation in Vero Beach, FL
Ridge augmentation rebuilds the jaw ridge when its width, height, or both have shrunk after tooth loss. When the ridge is too narrow or too short, an implant cannot be safely placed in that area. Ridge augmentation restores the foundation so implants can be placed predictably.
At Vero Beach Surgical Arts, Dr. J. Andrew Colgan performs ridge augmentation as part of comprehensive implant treatment.

Why the Ridge Shrinks
The alveolar ridge is the part of the jawbone that holds the teeth. When a tooth is lost and not replaced, the bone in that area is no longer stimulated by chewing forces, and it begins to resorb (shrink) over time.
The longer an area has been edentulous, the more bone is typically lost. This is particularly common in patients who have worn dentures for many years, since dentures rest on the gums rather than stimulating the bone underneath.
When Ridge Augmentation Is Needed
Ridge augmentation is recommended when:
- The ridge is too narrow to safely accommodate an implant
- The ridge is too short to provide adequate vertical bone height
- A future implant site needs to be rebuilt before placement
- An immediate replacement is needed after extraction (ridge preservation)
Techniques
The right ridge augmentation technique depends on the size and shape of the defect. Common approaches include:
- Ridge preservation: A small graft placed into a fresh extraction site to preserve ridge volume.
- Onlay grafting: A block of graft material (often allograft or autograft) is shaped to the deficient area and secured to the ridge.
- Guided bone regeneration (GBR): Particulate graft material is placed with a barrier membrane that prevents soft tissue from invading the graft while bone forms.
- Combination approaches that use multiple techniques together for larger defects.
Dr. Colgan often pairs ridge augmentation with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or, in select cases, bone morphogenic protein (BMP) to accelerate healing.
What to Expect
Most ridge augmentation procedures are performed in our office under IV sedation. The procedure takes 60 to 120 minutes depending on the size of the augmentation. You go home the same day.
Recovery typically includes:
- Some swelling and mild discomfort for several days
- A soft diet for one to two weeks
- Avoiding chewing on the surgical site
- Antibiotics and pain medication as prescribed
Bone maturation takes four to six months in most cases. Once the augmented ridge has matured, the implant can be placed.
Related Procedures
- Bone Grafting: Broader category covering all jaw bone augmentation.
- Sinus Lift: For augmentation in the upper back jaw specifically.
- Dental Implants: The reason most ridge augmentations are performed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ridge augmentation take to heal?
Soft tissue healing is comfortable within a few days. Bone maturation takes four to six months in most cases. Larger augmentations may need longer.
Will I be in pain?
Most patients describe the discomfort as mild and manageable. Prescription pain medication is provided for the first day or two; most patients transition to over-the-counter medication quickly.
Can the implant be placed at the same time?
For smaller augmentations where the implant can achieve initial stability, yes. For larger augmentations, the implant is typically placed in a separate visit after the graft has matured.
What is the success rate?
When performed by an experienced surgeon with proper case selection, ridge augmentation has a high success rate. Failure is most commonly associated with infection, smoking, or wound dehiscence.
Will my insurance cover it?
Coverage varies. Many dental plans cover at least a portion of bone augmentation when it is necessary for implant treatment. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment.
What graft material will be used?
Material is selected based on the defect, the planned implant timing, and your healing profile. Options include allograft, xenograft, synthetic materials, autograft, and combinations. Dr. Colgan will explain his recommendation during your consultation.
What is the difference between ridge preservation and ridge augmentation?
Ridge preservation is a smaller procedure done at the time of extraction to maintain the ridge for a future implant. Ridge augmentation is a more substantial procedure done when ridge volume has already been lost and needs to be rebuilt.
